Statement on International Women’s Day Cleveland 2019

My name is Laura Rodriguez-Carbone, and I am a candidate for Lakewood City Council, Ward 1. I am honored to have an opportunity to speak during International Women’s Day and to add my thoughts about women, and women of color running for office.

In 2018, we saw a record number of women winning seats in the U.S.House of Representatives and in the U.S. Senate. Not only are more women running for office, but more women are voting. Over 52% of voters in last year’s midterms were women.

Diversity of voices for women in leadership are crucial. Lack of representation across cultures and backgrounds can result in a lack of attention to, and advocacy for, issues important, not only to diverse communities, but also to collective society. It is important that all voices and needs are heard and reflected in the people we elect to represent us.  Opportunities for civic engagement for women including and beyond exercising the right to vote are paramount to continuing to lift the voices of women, of families, and of diverse communities. Taking that leap to run for public office, allows us, as women,  to become the stewards of the bright future we continue to work to create for all communities.

As a woman, and as a Hispanic American,  I am honored to seek a seat on Lakewood City Council. I run, in part, to add diversity to the voices of the elected officials that represent the residents of our city. I also run to help better connect our communities to each other and to the diverse truths of our collective future.

As our country becomes more and more diverse, the importance of incorporating the voices of women to determining the direction of our community and our nation is underscored. Never be afraid to make a commitment to adding value to your community. Never be afraid to utilize your voice. And never be afraid to lead.

It is an honor to stand in solidarity with you. Thank you so much for having me here today!
